Jeffrey A. Romoff

President and Chief Executive Officer, UPMC

RomoffJeffrey A. Romoff has been President and CEO of UPMC since 1992. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa., UPMC is one of the leading nonprofit health systems in the United States. During Romoff's tenure, UPMC has evolved from a city-based academic medical center to an $8-billion global health enterprise.

Under his leadership, UPMC has nurtured new businesses, created jobs, and transformed the regional economy into one based on medicine, science, education, and technology. Romoff is leading UPMC’s global initiatives to commercialize its medical and technological expertise by developing strategic business relationships with some of the world’s leading multinational corporations. UPMC has also expanded into international markets, including Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Cyprus, and Qatar.

With 50,000 employees, UPMC is the largest employer in Western Pennsylvania. It is consistently ranked among the nation's best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, and its health insurance division has been recognized for its leadership and innovation. UPMC’s academic partner, the University of Pittsburgh schools of the health sciences, were ranked 5th in National Institutes of Health research funding in 2008.

Romoff began his career at the University of Pittsburgh in 1973 as the Director of the Office of Education and Regional Programming at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC). Through this office, WPIC was the first academic psychiatric facility to offer organized continuing education programs to practitioners in communities throughout Western Pennsylvania.

In 1975, Romoff became WPIC's administrator and associate director. While he was in a leadership position at WPIC, it became the nation's leading psychiatric research center, receiving more funding from the National Institute of Mental Health than any other institution.

From 1986 to 1992, Romoff was Executive Vice President of UPMC and Vice President for Health Sciences of the University of Pittsburgh. In 1991, he assumed the additional responsibilities of interim Senior Vice President of Business and Finance for the University of Pittsburgh. He is an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Health Services Administration, Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh.

A native of New York City, Romoff received a Bachelor of Science degree and graduated magna cum laude from the City College of New York. He received a master's degree in philosophy with a specialty in political science at Yale University. He is also the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service from Chatham College and an Honorary Doctorate of Science and Technology from Carnegie Mellon University.
