The Intelligent Workplace

 Overview

Carnegie Mellon researchers are tackling the problems of making the world a more sustainable place on a variety of fronts, searching for ways to reduce pollution, generate cleaner energy, build greener buildings, and drive more fuel-efficient cars. An example of those efforts is the Intelligent Workplace (IW), an office of the future.

Highlights:

  • Blueprints for Going Green—A new design approach is sweeping the world as builders, architects, and engineers rethink building practices for a warming globe. The Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics is investigating opportunities for advanced technology to enhance the physical, environmental and social settings in office buildings.
  • Experience An Office Environment that is Yours Alone—The IW is a working model of green building that is constantly being updated with the latest technology. You will see what happens when blueprints go green: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, new materials selection, and improved indoor environmental quality. The IW is a laboratory occupied by faculty, staff, and students; because of this, researchers are able to monitor the impact of the advance technology on the workplace environment.
  • The Building as Power Plant and Other Green Things—An IW project called the Building as a Power Plant is being considered for campus. This six-story, 65,000-square-foot building will power itself through a variety of methods and renewable energy sources. Already, Carnegie Mellon is home to about one quarter of Pittsburgh’s LEED-certified buildings. Kaplan/Newsweek named Carnegie Mellon one of the nation’s 25 Cutting-Edge Green Colleges.
